biography

Michael Jarvis is a painter working at Breeze Creatives Studios in Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 6BH. He lectures in art,design and education at Northumbria University. As well as solo exhibitions, Michael has had work commissioned for different sites in Newcastle upon Tyne, Hexham and Edinburgh. He has work in a number of private collections in the UK, Europe and Scandinavia.

Michael also writes about aspects of contemporary painting practice, and about the importance of art making in early years and primary education. He has published articles in the international Journal of Art and Design Education and the Journal of Visual Art Practice.

His doctoral thesis, completed in 2009, focussed upon the successive 'deaths' of painting which have been announced at various times since 1840, and explains how the practice has been able to constantly renew and reinvent itself.
